About Mt Maslow
Mt Malsow is based off a motivation theory in psychology called ‘Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.’ The theory works in a pyramid of basic needs to higher needs as follows: (1) physiological, (2) safety, (3) love/belonging, (4) esteem, and (5) self-actualisation. Mt Maslow represents this pyramid like hiking up a mountain in life, starting with basics and finishing with abstract concepts of life. It was inspired by a hike up Mt Warning to see the first sunrise. People struggle up, and fall down, but in the end they find self-actualisation. The painting challenges the theory with modern questions in different ways, but is essentially about all of life and its journeys from childhood through to adulthood.
